At a recent HSBA networking meeting where I hosted a PC surgery, some of the attendees were asking about how to create a signature to use in an email or at the bottom of a blog post.

I’ve created a form that’s free to use, I hope you find it useful, it has just one basic design, if you’d like something else designing and need some help please let me know.

Backup and share files between devices

Disaster recovery

If you rely upon your computer to function properly and the files stored within it in order to be able to work then it is essential that you ensure that you have a backup of all your essential files, and that you are able to access them on demand should your PC fail. In addition the backup should ideally be located in a separate location from your PC, so that in the event of a fire or robbery your data remains secure.

If you don’t have yet have a backup solution set up try working for a day without turning your PC on and see how it affects your ability to work, then reconsider whether it is worth having a backup in place!

Data sharing

In addition to needing to backup your data you may find that you need to access it while you are not sat at your desk. Have you ever found yourself in any of the following situations:

you are working from home, but forgot an important file that is on your work PC
you are at a client’s and need some information that is on your work PC
you are collaborating with a colleague on a document but you both end up with different versions as you are working separately

3CX Phone App for Android – a review

The 3CX Phone App for Android phones allows users to make and receive calls via VoIP, this is a great way of reducing call charges if you are abroad and have access to the Internet via wi-fi. It also allows anyone with a VoIP account to divert incoming calls to their mobile at no cost.

Features:

Requirements:
- android smartphone
- VoIP SIP account

We found the 3CX easy to integrate with our Globe2 VoIP system and didn’t need to fiddle with any of the advance options to make it work. The main things we needed to enter were the username and password and the hosted PBX IP and we were up and running.

The things we liked about the 3CX was the ability to restrict calls to wifi only or to include 3G as you wish. Call recording is simple to setup (record all calls or don’t) and easy to access once recorded.

We also liked the ability to enforce that all outgoing calls go by default through the 3CX app when wi-fi is present, so that you don’t have to specifically remember to use it when dialing out. This integrates nicely with the phone so you enter your number as normal but the 3CX steps in to make the call.

This integration with the phone also works well with the contacts book, so if you specifically fire up the 3CX you can select a number to call from the same contact list you would use normally.

Overall this is a well rounded free App that we can recommend for android users wanting to make VoIP calls.

Scaleable solutions for UCR Consultants

Having provided VoIP telcoms to UCR consultants’ telesales team since July 2010 we are pleased that they chose Globe2 to help them move to newer, bigger premises with an expanded sales team and upgraded broadband provision.

Panorama Sports Marketing - email hosting

Existing Globe2 clients Panorama Sports Marketing were fed up of having to type in long email addresses associated with their existing website www.panoramasportsmarketing.com each time they (or their clients) needed to send an email to anyone working at the sports marketing agency – so we managed to find and register www.psm.uk.com for them and setup their email addresses so that they can access their emails from anywhere, either via a browser like in gmail, or downloaded to a smartphone or PC using our POP3 server.

If you want to have a professional email address instead of a virgin/yahoo/hotmail address or similar then let us know, it’s a small annual cost to give the right image for your company.

BT raises landline costs (again)

For the third time in 14 months BT is increasing it’s landline costs. The increases, which take effect on the 3rd December, follow hot on the heels of increases in October 2010 and April this year.

Landline rental will be increasing by £8.40 per year, making the cost of renting a landline a steep £14.60. Call costs will also be increasing, with costs per minute up to 7.95p per minute and the call setup cost increasing to 13.1p.

Compare this with Globe2 and you can be saving £100′s a year.

How do I move a WordPress blog to a new domain?

Moving a site to a new domain involves a number of steps to ensure continuity for visitors and search engines, but WordPress sites offer up additional challenges due to the way they are setup to work on a specific domain.

When the Homeworking Alliance outgrew their name and wanted to rebrand to the Homeworking and Small Business Alliance it involved moving their WordPress and Buddypress powered social network site from www.homeworkingalliance.co.uk to www.hsba.biz.

As well as multiple logins the site had multiple blogs with various contributors.

When we made the move we had to ensure that the new site was displaying correctly before directing visitors from the old domain to the new; the time between getting the new site up and running and the redirect in place had to be as short as possible to avoid new additions to the old site which would then be lost.

The result

We made the successful transfer and quickly put in place a permanent redirect, so any visitors typing in the old domain would be seemlessly transferred to the new domain without needing to do anything. Because we were able to make the switch quickly there was no loss of data.

The client

Never Pay More Solutions specialises in working with businesses to ensure they have the cheapest ultility contract available.

The job spec

A regulatory requirement of the market in which the client operates is that all conversations with customers are recorded and stored for six years. Our client needed a telecoms solution where each operator had their own direct line for making and receiving calls, and that every conversation made was automatically recorded.

The solution

Call recording is now commonplace with companies who take verbal contracts but they can be a major headache, with many of the solutions available having significant drawbacks:

you can attach a device to a phone, but you need one for every phone you use
you may also have to remember to press a button to record, if you don’t then you have to call the client back
you can have a local PBX and record all calls, but a PBX is costly to install and requires maintenance

We were able to provide individual lines to each operator and enable full voice recording on both incoming and outgoing calls. This is adjustable by extension and can be turned on and off as required.

All recordings are centrally stored by default for 14 days on our servers. Whilst we can provide the facility to store recordings indefinitely the client chose instead to have FTP access to recordings and download them for local storage.

In addition we were able to provide cost effective call packs to minimise the overall cost of the system, which is an ideal solution for business with heavy telephone usage.

A WordPress social network case study : Homeworking Alliance

The client

The Homeworking Alliance is a networking group for homeworkers and small businesses. Set up as a fee-paying organisation in March 2011 the Alliance has grown quickly from one group meeting once a month in Market Harbrorough to now (just over four months later) holding meetings in Lutterworth, Kettering, Hinckley and Northampton, in additon to the original Market Harborough venue.

The job spec

The client wanted a website to promote the group as a whole but also as a vehicle for promoting the profile of individual members and acting as a medium for communication between members.

The solution

We regsistered the homeworking alliance domains on behalf of the client and looked into using WordPress as a means of creating an economical but professional and effective website. By using a combination of WordPress, Buddypress and BBPress we have been able to create a site which:

- has individual member logins and profile pages

- has a forum for members use

- has a list of group pages which correspond to the group meetings held and which display information relevant to the group

- has a number of blog pages, some of which are restricted to management and others which are open to all members
